Sony pleads innocent in latest rootkit fiasco

Sony says the rootkit-like behavior of a device driver used to run its biometric Micro Vault USM-F thumb drive was unintentional. McAfee has joined F-Secure in criticising Sony for allowing such a mistake to happen. The Micro Vault drive is a USB device featuring fingerprint-reading software intended to add an extra layer of security for PC users. McAfee reported that Taiwan’s FineArt Technology, which makes encryption software for PCs and laptops, was responsible for creating the offending USB software with rootkit technology.

The criticism is reminiscent of that directed at Sony BMG Music Entertainment in November 2005, when a programmer revealed that a technique designed to cloak the company’s copy-protection software for music CDs also could be used by virus writers to hide malicious software. Both F-Secure and McAfee security experts agree that the default installation path does nothing to stop malicious-software authors from copying code to a directory of their choice and executing it in that location.

RIM shares rise on Microsoft takeover rumour

Shares of Research In Motion Ltd. are climbing on rumours that the BlackBerry maker may be bought by software giant Microsoft Corp. RIM shares set a new trading record by rising as high as $89.68 (up $2.88 ) in late morning trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange. By the close, the stock has fallen back to $87.62, up 82 cents. “Microsoft has been mentioned as a possible buyer,” Frederic Ruffy, an analyst at options education firm Optionetics, told Reuters. “According to speculation, the software giant might be interested in RIM in response to Google’s recent announcement that it is interested in making its own mobile phone operating system, which would compete with Windows Mobile.”

A number of analysts were quick to splash cold water on the rumours. “We’re hearing the same rumour everyone else is, the Microsoft and RIM rumour,” Steve Sachs, head of trading at Rydex Investments in Rockville, Md., told Bloomberg. “I can’t even count the number of times we’ve heard that over the last three years.” Both Waterloo, Ont.-based RIM and Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft declined to comment on the rumours. RIM’s current market capitalization is about $48 billion, which would make a purchase of the company expensive. Microsoft, however, has deep pockets.

Australian ISPs Reject Calls To Police Their Users

jon_cooper writes “After recent setbacks in the RIAA’s lawsuits, the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT) has decided to try a different approach in Australia - they want ISPs to do their dirty work for them. Australian ISPs, though, have soundly rejected calls from AFACT to slow down or terminate user accounts that AFACT has determined are being used to distribute copyrighted works. Telstra (one of the larger ISPs in question) had this to say: ‘We do not believe it is up to the ISPs to be judge, jury and executioner in relation to the issue when the content owners have any number of legal avenues to pursue infringements.’”

Eolas vs. Microsoft Lawsuit Settled and Sealed

theodp writes “The Seattle P-I’s Todd Bishop reports that Microsoft has settled its 8-year-old web browser plug-in patent dispute with Eolas. The spat begat the click-to-activate Web after Microsoft was slapped with a $500+ million patent infringement judgement. Neither Eolas nor Microsoft will be disclosing terms of the deal, although Eolas told investors to expect a dividend (PDF). Microsoft didn’t say whether or how the settlement would affect its approach to the underlying technology in IE or other programs. Just last month, the USPTO issued a non-final rejection of the patent’s claims, citing the work of Pei-Yuan Wei as prior art.”
