A Nightmare on CSS Street

ShishaNites.com has required a new website for a while now, one that incorporates the look and feel of TheShishaShop.com’s site (as it is afterall a spin-off). To make the site easy to update however, it was decided that a simple CMS should be used to easily control the content (using Pages) and blog format for the Latest News section.

With the introduction of the latest version of WordPress (2.1), it is now possible to set any page as the homepage, not to mention 550 bug fixes, it qualifys as the selected package.

So work was underway to work on a new template system. Luckily, the Wordpress template site features a huge amount of freely downloadable pre-made templates. A few where chosen that closly matched the 3 column system required and the editing process had begun.

It was clear at this point however that WordPress uses CSS extensively to layout the site. This has its advantages as well as its disadvantages, especially as the rest of the portal is based around tables, keeping consistency may cause a slight problem… Once this section is complete, it may lead for the rest of the portal to become completely CSS based allowing fo more lighter code, however thats something to persist in in the future.

But what is life without problems? First CSS issue came up within the footerwrap tag, defineing a fixed height was proving to be very difficult within a cross browser environment, i.e. IE (pun intended). Luckily, Google came to the rescue with a link to the Prop-Clear: CSS min-height hack

In normal use, the prop will extend beyond the bottom of the box because floated elements are partially removed from the flow of the document. I say “partially” because there is still a way we can use the floated element to determine how high the enclosing element should be. The way is to add the next part of this hack: something for our prop to push down on. We need the overflow:hidden; style since MSIE refuses to automatically make div tags less than 1em high when in Standards Compatible mode.

Lets see if we bump into any more CSS problems anytime soon, its still early in the theming process :D

More Rain But That doesn’t Deter Visitors to Greenwich

final_logo.jpg
A big hello to all the people that we met today at the Greenwich Market on Sunday! Hopefully everyone had a great time and others discovered what Shisha really is! Very soon, we will have a page listing the nations of citizens who visit us! This week we met our first Norwegians, Sri Lankan, Malaysian, Swedes and a very passionate South African!

The cool people we met including Hayman, a veteran Shisha Smoker of 6 years after she received a Shisha pipe for her birthday, the SHisha Smoke breathing Scandinavian dragon (see pic below), a South African lady who was ‘Stunned’ by how good our Greenwich flavoured cocktail (Aniseed/Mint) tasted; a Swede whose mortal enemy is Aniseed! The Jingle ‘All I need is a Shisha in my life’ Brothers. Also shouts out to Jane, an American from Cyprus who worked in a Shisha Lounge (Full of tips which we hope will be shared!), an Australian duo that are out back packing! The lovely Selina, who has a wonderful smile, one of our neighbours Emma!

A big hello to the fun loving duo of Audgy and Mel who asked us to shout theirs names out in the market and to call them (almost got in trouble for that!), once we had the Banana flavour Shisha ready! We hope you enjoy the Shisha Pipe and tell all your friends about us!

Finally, a big thank you goes out to the couple from York, we applaud you for the Snakes, they tasted wonderful after we broke our fast!

So Were Not the Only One Who Love their Shisha!

final_logo.jpg
TheShishaShop.com enjoyed an interesting experience this week meeting people from all walks of life! We knew you special guys were out there and this week we had the pleasure of meeting 3 such souls!

First up is Wilma, a cool Singaporean/Thai girl who was full of ideas and friendly tips and information for other customers, we even took a back seat as she chilled with the banana flavour Shisha! Wilma’s tip of the day is to try smoking mint flavoured Shisha with Coca-Cola…that’s right, with Coca-Cola instead of water! Naturally this was an experiment that was conducted later on that night (watch out for the review soon!).

We also met an Egyptian/Turkish couple who gave us with lots of ideas on the day! Their tip was the holes setup in the foil. Instead of the usual holes all over the top, try making five holes to look like 5 on a dice on one side. Next make another hole at the opposite end of the foil. Now place the coal tab over the five holes to produce more volume smoke and allow the flavour to burn more slowly.

As always, we meet a wide range of people including a group of Singaporean’s (Did you know that chewing gum in Singapore is against the law? HOWEVER, we were told that thanks to the Americans, you can actually chew Nicorette gum…), a beautiful Iranian girl who had never smoked Shisha before visiting us! Also a group of friends who had found Shisha at a recent holiday in Ibiza and the lovely Louise who simply loved us! Make sure your bring Ayesha next time!

We hope you thoroughly enjoy your Shisha experience!

Just a quick reminder, we have a guide on How to Setup Your Shisha available so if you do get stuck, follow the guide or contact us. It’s Raining Cats and Dogs at the Greenwich Markets - Monday 2nd October 2006

TheShishaShop.com enters the Greenwich market for the very first time. However because of unusually busy activity from other traders, TheShishaShop.com is asked to setup outside to compete against the elements! Being the brave souls that we are, we engaged to erect our stall in a battle against the rain! Alas, as courageous as we were, the rain was just too strong and we were ready to call it a day.

Then a spot of luck, although the weather had changed for the better, we were allocated a stall at the main entrance of the market so we proceeded to setup. All of a sudden, the heavens opened, there were ramblings of thunder, flashes of lightening and even hail stones! But that didn’t stop people from attending the Greenwich festival!

Just a quick reminder, we have a guide on How to Setup Your Shisha available so if you do get stuck, follow the guide or contact us. Pics have now been uploaded, remember, if your in one of these pictures and would like a copy of the original image, or have a question regarding Shisha, email us at info@theshishashop.com or use the contact form here. TheShishaShop.com Will Be At This Years Brick Lane Festival

final_logo.jpg
TheShishaShop.com has confirmed its place at this years Brick Lane Festival in association with EMEP. The big day is set for the 10th September 2006 and if its anything like last year, it will be an grand day out for all!
Here’s a press release:

“Its party time once again for the most famous street of London… After Coronation Street (probably!).

Held every second Sunday of September, the Festival is now firmly established on the London calendar of events attracting over 60,000 people who come to enjoy the rich mix of culture, history, live music, films and food.

Fast becoming recognised as the alternative to Notting Hill Carnival, the event combines the excitement and buzz of a street festival, alfresco eating, fun fair, Brick Lane’s own Chili Film Festival (debuting this year) and a relaxing outdoor music concert with local and international performers.

Add to this, the huge diversity of cultures and the vibrant neighbouring street markets the Festival always proves to be a resounding success for the whole family.”

We hope to see you all there!
